Is Solar a Good Investment Tool?

Based on the 80.2 cent MicroFIT program solar out- performs most investment opportunities available today.

Solar will provide a 10% - 12 % rate of return or more, far exceeding GIC's, government bonds, and the open stock market (even the blue chips).

A Guide to Residential Solar Projects

  • The average home in Ontario is 2000 sq ft and uses about $1,245.00 of electricity per year at today's energy rates. The average solar system for this home is 15 panels, and with the 80.2 cent rooftop MicroFIT tarrif will generate approx $3,338 in revenue per year.

  • Most average home owners install a 2.5 kW to 3.0 kW system that comprise roughly 15 to 18 panels.

  • Each panel measures approx 40" x 66" in size, and can be installed in either landscape or portrait configurations.

  • Total system cost depends on size, roof type, mounting needs and site location.

Sunrise Actively Engaged with Social Housing Co-ops across Southern Ontario

Above: Sunrise install Summer 2011

A year ago The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing released project funding for a wide range of sustainable energy projects for Ontario co-op facilities.

Under the Renewable Energy Initiative (REI) these grants were tendered for solar generating systems to be grid-connected for the province's aggressive push towards alternative energy solutions.

Sunrise responded to many of these requests, and as an approved RET vendor were awarded many fo these projects across the Province. Almost all of them are now completed and are contributing vast amounts of energy to the grid that we are all now using.

For more information see Social Housing under our Products and Services section.

Sunrise has a great deal of installation experience, and would be glad to provide any number of recommendations from our past customers.

If you have your OPA contract or are simply exploring the options give us a call. We'll be glad to provide an on-line estimate or chat about the opportunities and challenges of a solar installation project.

How Solar and MicroFIT Work?

Actually it's quite simple. Power generated from your rooftop travels to a second meter that Sunrise will install, where it ismeasured and recorded for the MicroFIT program. It then enters the original meter to be used either in the home ifelectricity is required or it travels to the grid for someone else to use.

Efficient. Responsible. Finacially Rewarding.

How Do I Compare Solar Installers?

Obviously price is an important factor in assessing the various quotes you receive. But there are other factors to consider in selecting your vendor, as not everyone is created equal and many don't include all the costs while claiming to be full service.

Here are 10 pointers to get you started.

Tangible dimensions:

1. Have costs like structural engineering plans, building permits, ESA
consultation visits, grid connection fees, or system monitoring programs all been accounted for?

2. Has your installer included complete details of warranty programs and Ontario content compliance?

3. Will they assume resposibility for obtaining your Offer to Connect from your Hydro LDC?

4. Are they providing documentation on the level of workmanship warranties and liability coverages they carry?

4. Have they arranged or completed a structural analysis by a licenced engineer in order to obtain a building permit?

5. Do their installation crews carry recognized designations?

The Intangibles:

1. Is solar their core business, and the primary area they're focusing all of their energies on?

2. Do you feel confident in the
ability of your vendor to get the job done on time, and have they provided a work back schedule to monitor progress?

3. Are they open to some of your design suggestions, and do you feel they are recognizing your concerns by the way they're responding ?

4. Are they willing to freely share past customer references?

5. Are their submitted quotes binding, and have they been prepared in a professional thar instills confidence?

Once these questions are answered you should be ready to move forward with a contract.

Make sure however that no work is started until you've received your Offer to Connect from Hydro.

Good luck with your installation, and while we may have a little bias in terms of who you use, we know you've made a wise decision by going green.
